GRP grating stair treads deliver a permanent anti-slip solution for industrial and commercial staircases, replacing painted steel and chequer plate that quickly loses grip in wet, oily or chemical environments. The integral grit top surface bonds the slip resistance into the panel itself, so it cannot wear off, peel away or be missed in a maintenance cycle.
Specified across food production, water treatment, offshore, rail and chemical processing sites, GRP stair treads are corrosion-resistant, lightweight enough to retrofit without structural changes and supplied with bright yellow nosings as standard for visual cue on the step edge. Available in a range of sizes and depths to suit your existing string and riser dimensions. Bespoke cuts available on request.

GRP stair treads: specification guide
GRP grating stair treads are complete fibreglass treads with an integral anti-slip grit surface and a high visibility nosing. They are used two ways: fitted as the treads themselves on new or refurbished steel staircases, or laid over existing steps to bring worn, slippery stairs back to a safe standard. Because GRP will not rust and grips in the wet, fibreglass stair treads are the usual specification for external staircases, fire escapes and industrial stairs.
| Product | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 38mm GRP grating stair treads (pack of 2) | Full open mesh tread with hi-vis nosing | Steel stair stringers, new builds and refurbishments |
| GRP stair tread covers | Anti-slip cover that fits over an existing step | Retrofitting worn concrete, steel or timber steps |
| GRP stair nosings | Anti-slip edge protection for the step nose | Improving grip and visibility on sound steps |
Treads, tread covers or nosings?
Choose full grating treads when you are building or re-treading a steel staircase, tread covers when the existing steps are structurally sound but worn or slippery, and nosings when the steps are in good condition and you only need to upgrade grip and edge visibility. All three come with the hi-vis contrast nosing that helps stair edges stand out.
Fitting GRP stair treads
Grating treads bolt to stair stringers, and tread covers fix over existing steps with screws, adhesive or both, with no hot works needed. Treads can be trimmed to width on site using standard tools, as shown in our cutting guide. For the surrounding structure our open mesh grating covers landings and walkways, and GRP platforms and step units handle access over plant and pipework.
Where GRP stair treads are used
External staircases and fire escapes, plant room and mezzanine stairs, marine and offshore installations, rail and transport sites and anywhere steps get wet, oily or icy. The combination of grit surface and hi-vis nosing tackles the two main causes of stair accidents: slips and misjudged edges.
