High Quality GRP Grating Products

GRP standard open mesh grating is the most widely specified fibreglass flooring for industrial and commercial access, combining high load capacity with all-round corrosion resistance and an integral anti-slip grit top. The 38x38mm open mesh sheds water, debris and spillage, making it the default choice for walkways, work platforms, mezzanines and trench covers across water treatment, food production, chemical processing, offshore and rail sites.
Our standard mesh panels come in 25mm and 38mm thicknesses with a 32mm square hole (38x38mm centre to centre of load bars), and 50mm thick with a 42mm square hole (50x50mm centre to centre of load bars). Choose from a range of colours and resin systems to suit your environment, including high-visibility yellow for edge marking. Next-day delivery on UK stock items, with a cut-to-size service available for bespoke layouts. Read our guide: what is standard GRP grating.

GRP open mesh grating: specification guide

GRP open mesh grating, also called fibreglass grating or open mesh fibreglass flooring, is a moulded panel made from continuous glass fibre set in a resin matrix. The open 38 x 38mm mesh pattern lets water, light and air pass straight through, and the factory applied grit top gives a reliable anti-slip surface in wet, oily or greasy conditions. Because the material cannot rust, it is the standard replacement for steel grating in wet and corrosive environments, and panels are light enough to be installed without cranes or hot works.

Panel Mesh Typical use
25mm GRP grating panels 38 x 38mm centres Pedestrian walkways and light duty flooring
38mm GRP grating panels 38 x 38mm centres, 32mm aperture, 7mm load bar Industrial walkways and platforms, our best seller
50mm GRP grating panels 38 x 38mm centres Wider spans and heavier loads
Hi-viz orange 38mm panels 38 x 38mm centres High visibility walkways and hazard zones

Choosing the right thickness

Thickness is driven by the span between supports and the loads the floor must carry. As a rule, 25mm suits foot traffic over short spans, 38mm covers most industrial walkways and platforms, and 50mm is specified where spans are wide or loads are heavy. Deflection, how much a panel flexes underfoot, is usually the deciding factor rather than outright strength. Our load and span tables set out deflection figures for 25mm, 38mm and 50mm panels against the BS 4592 guidance, and the team on 01480 570001 can check a span for you before you order.

Where open mesh grating is used

Open mesh fibreglass grating is used for industrial walkways and access platforms, drainage and trench covers, plant rooms, wash-down areas in food production, ramps and external steps. The open area drains standing water and lets light through to areas below, which is why it is the default choice for water and wastewater treatment sites, marine and offshore environments and agricultural buildings. Where you need a sealed surface instead, see our GRP covered top grating.

GRP or steel?

GRP grating will not rust, needs no painting or galvanising, is non-conductive and can be cut on site with standard tools, so there are no hot works permits. Steel still makes sense for very high point loads and forklift traffic. Our guide to GRP grating vs steel grating compares the two in detail.

Cut to size, fixings and delivery

Every panel can be supplied cut to size, or full panels can be cut on site following our contractor's cutting guide. Panels fix down with M clips onto steelwork and join with C clips, explained in our fixing guide. Standard panels are held in UK stock with next-day delivery, trade prices are shown on every product page, and you can request a sample or a bespoke quotation for project quantities.

Frequently asked questions

What is GRP open mesh grating?
GRP open mesh grating is a moulded fibreglass floor panel with a square 38 x 38mm mesh pattern and an anti-slip grit top. It is used in place of steel grating for walkways, platforms and covers because it cannot rust, is light to handle and is non-conductive.
What thickness of GRP grating do I need?
25mm suits pedestrian walkways over short spans, 38mm covers most industrial walkways and platforms, and 50mm is for wide spans and heavy loads. Check your span against our load and span tables or call 01480 570001 and we will confirm the right panel.
How much weight can GRP grating take?
It depends on the span between supports and how the load is applied. Deflection to the BS 4592 guidance is normally the limiting factor. Our load and span tables give figures for each thickness, and our team can check your loading case before you order.
Can I cut GRP grating on site?
Yes. GRP grating cuts with standard tools such as a jigsaw or angle grinder with an abrasive blade, with no hot works permit needed. See our step-by-step guide to cutting GRP grating safely on site.
Is GRP grating slippery when wet?
No. Panels are finished with a bonded quartz grit surface that is designed for wet, oily and greasy environments and keeps its grip in the rain, which is why GRP grating is widely used around wash-down areas, pools and external walkways.
Is GRP grating fire resistant?
Our panels are made with a fire retardant ISO resin system with fire performance to BS476. Our guide Is GRP grating fire resistant? explains the ratings in plain English.
How do I fix GRP grating down?
Panels fix to steelwork with M clips and join to each other with C clips, with no drilling through the grating needed. Our fixing guide shows both methods.
What is the difference between open mesh and mini mesh grating?
Open mesh has a 38 x 38mm pattern that maximises drainage and light. Mini mesh has much smaller apertures of around 14mm, so heels, tools and small objects cannot pass through. See our GRP mini mesh grating range.
Do you deliver GRP grating next day?
Yes. Standard panels are held in UK stock and available on next-day delivery. Cut-to-size orders take slightly longer, and the team will confirm lead times when you order.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes, you can request a GRP grating sample to check the grip, colour and quality before you buy.
