GRP step over platforms and access steps: buying guide
A GRP step over platform gives people a safe, anti-slip way across pipework, cable runs, ducting and other low obstructions, so nobody has to step on the services themselves. Our step over platforms are built from GRP grating on pultruded GRP C-channel or I-beam frames, so they will not rust outdoors or in wet plant rooms and they do not conduct electricity. Every unit, including the GRP steps, has contrasting anti-slip nosings on both sides.

How to choose the right step over platform
Measure three things before you order: the height of the obstruction, so the deck clears it comfortably; the width of the obstruction, which sets the span of the walking deck; and the width of walkway your users need. The 200mm set height platform suits most floor-level pipework and cable runs. For taller obstructions choose a platform from the 210mm to 300mm range, which is manufactured to your chosen height, and choose the handrail model where your risk assessment calls for a hand hold.
Why GRP rather than steel or aluminium?
Steel step overs need galvanising or paint and still corrode in wet or chemical areas, while aluminium is light but conductive. GRP combines low weight with a gritted anti-slip surface, electrical non-conductivity and resistance to a wide range of chemicals (see our chemical resistance data), which is why GRP platforms are used across water treatment, food production, rail and utility sites. How much clearance do your step over platforms give?
Our set height platform gives 200mm clearance underneath (about 238mm overall height). The range platforms give 210mm to 300mm clearance in 10mm steps (about 248mm to 338mm overall). The GRP step unit without handrail is 430mm high.
What load can a GRP step over platform take?
Our set height platforms and GRP steps are rated for a pedestrian load of up to 150kg. They are designed for people on foot, not for vehicles, trolleys or stored materials.
Can you make a platform to a specific height?
Yes. Platforms in the 210mm to 300mm range are manufactured to size and supplied ready for installation. For other heights, longer decks or full walkway systems, call 01480 570001 or send your dimensions through a bespoke quotation.
Do I need a step over platform with a handrail?
That depends on your site risk assessment and who will use the platform. Our set height platform is also available with an 1100mm high GRP handrail for sites that need a hand hold.

Yes. GRP does not rust, needs no painting and keeps its anti-slip grip in wet weather, so the platforms can be used outdoors as well as in plant rooms and factories.
