High Quality GRP Grating Products

GRP covered top grating gives you a sealed walking surface with 0% open area, combining the strength and chemical resistance of standard GRP with full top closure. Choose covered top wherever dropped objects, cables or fluids must not pass through the floor: mezzanines above operators, service riser covers, pump rooms, dosing stations and public-facing walkways above tanks.

Panels come with an integral grit top or chequered anti-slip finish, in 25mm, 30mm and 38mm depths to suit the load class. Available in moulded and pultruded forms with next-day delivery on UK stock.

GRP covered top grating: specification guide

GRP covered top grating, sometimes called solid top or plated grating, bonds a solid gritted fibreglass plate over a moulded grating base. The result is a floor panel with 0% open area: nothing falls through it, nothing splashes up through it, and there is no view of the level below. You keep the light weight, corrosion resistance and anti-slip surface of GRP grating, but with a completely sealed walking surface.

Panel Key points Typical use
28mm covered top grating Sealed gritted surface, 0% open area Walkways and mezzanine floors
41mm covered top grating Deeper section for greater spans Industrial floors and platforms
48.5mm interlocking structural slab Heavy duty interlocking panels Flooring over voids, tanks and chambers

When to specify covered top rather than open mesh

Specify covered top grating when anything passing through the floor is unacceptable: floors above food production or packaging lines, mezzanines over stock or equipment, walkways where staff below must be protected, or areas where a solid underfoot feel is wanted. Open mesh drains and ventilates better, so it remains the right choice outdoors and in wash-down zones. Our guide to specifying covered top grating works through the decision, and our food production guide covers hygiene-led projects.

Where covered top grating is used

Common uses include mezzanine and storage floors, walkways above production areas, replacing worn timber or plywood decks, covering old open grating that no longer meets requirements, and the interlocking structural slab version for decking over voids, tanks and chambers. Like all our fibreglass grating, panels will not corrode and are installed without hot works.

Cut to size, fixings and delivery

Covered top panels can be supplied cut to size, and they fix down with the same M clips and C clips as our open mesh range, shown in the fixing guide. Standard panels are in UK stock with next-day delivery, and the team on 01480 570001 can price project quantities through a bespoke quotation.

Frequently asked questions

What is GRP covered top grating?
It is fibreglass grating with a solid gritted plate bonded to the top, giving a sealed anti-slip floor with 0% open area. Nothing can fall through it, and it hides the level below while keeping the light weight and corrosion resistance of GRP.
When should I use covered top instead of open mesh grating?
Use covered top wherever objects, liquids or light passing through the floor would be a problem, such as floors above production lines, mezzanines and walkways above staff. Use open mesh where drainage and airflow matter more. Our specifying guide explains the trade-offs.
Is covered top grating anti-slip?
Yes. The solid top is finished with the same bonded quartz grit as our open mesh grating, so it keeps its grip in wet, oily and greasy conditions.
What thicknesses are available?
We stock 28mm and 41mm covered top panels, plus a 48.5mm interlocking structural slab for heavy duty flooring over voids and tanks. The right choice depends on your span and loading, which the team can check on 01480 570001.
Can covered top grating be used for mezzanine floors?
Yes, it is one of the most common uses. The sealed surface stops dust and small items falling to the level below and gives a solid feel underfoot, while the panels stay light enough to install by hand.
Can it be cut to size?
Yes. We can supply covered top grating cut to your sizes, or panels can be cut on site with standard tools following our cutting guide.
How is covered top grating fixed down?
With the same stainless steel M clips and C clips as open mesh panels, so there is no drilling through the deck. See the fixing guide.
Is covered top grating fire rated?
Our GRP panels use a fire retardant ISO resin system with fire performance to BS476. Our guide Is GRP grating fire resistant? explains what that means for your project.
Do you deliver next day?
Yes. Standard covered top panels are held in UK stock with next-day delivery available, with trade prices shown on every product page.
